Queen Louise of Prussia Square

Queen Louise of Prussia is a historical, legendary personality who left a strong mark in the city of Klaipėda. Her good works helped the city of Klaipėda and inspires good works to this day. When Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III and Queen Louise resided in Klaipėda (then Mēmel) in 1807-1808, it became the temporary capital for the first and only time in history. Having given birth to ten children, two sons became rulers of the country, and two daughters, one of whom became the empress of Russia and the other the queen of the Netherlands. They also contributed to the prosperity of the city of Klaipėda and the promotion of its name.

The sisters of the Rotary club, nurturing the memory of this iconic personality, are creating the Queen Louise of Prussia Square the Botanic Garden of Klaipėda University.

The banks of the Dane River, now the territory of the Botanic Garden, were a favorite place for Louise to walk and relax, where the oak named after Louise grew. Queen Louise of Prussia Square will be a special space for warm meetings, educations, and celebrations. It will be a new attraction in the Botanical Garden, which is already included in the tourist and educational maps. By renting out this pawillion for private parties or photo shoots, the Botanic Garden will have the opportunity to raise funds for the Queen Louise Rosary, which will decorate the pawillion, and for its upkeep and maintenance.

In July 2023, preparatory works for the design and installation of the square began in the Botanic Garden. The pavilion is made in a special company in Germany.

The project budget is15,000 Euros, so we invite Rotary clubs and other organizations of the Klaipėda region to contribute financially.

After the club’s sister architects Inga Daukšienė and Eugenija Varpučianskiene designed the square, installation, concreting, paving and other necessary works began.

Cultural heritage expert, sculptor-restorer Vytautas Baranskas created the memorial stone.

The memorial stone reminds of the monument to Queen Louise that used to be in Tauralaukis. The monument to Louise in Tauralaukis in 1900 was built by the Reclamation Union. It was demolished around the 1960s.

The club’s sister designer Jūratė Bizauskienė created an information stand for the square.

After almost 3 years of reconstruction,  April 5, 2024 the renewed and much more modern Klaipėda University Botanical Garden with a new Education Center was opened for visitors.

Louise’s pavillion will be an exclusive space that will remind of the city’s royal history, and visitors will be delighted by the new space for relaxation and celebrations or photo shootings surrounded by a roses garden cultivated by garden specialists.
